Above is a huge (6 x 10 foot) photograph by Chris Jordan from his "Running The Numbers" series, entitled, "Cell Phones". Chris looks at the statistics behind our consumerist habits and turns them into images we can really feel. The result is simply staggering. For example, this cell phone image depicts:
426,000 cellphones - equal to the number of cell phones retired in the USA everyday.
Below are zoom details of this image - in other words - what you experience in person as you come closer to the image and witness close-up what the stat is indicating.

What is Winsor Gallery? Winsor Gallery is a beautiful 6,000 square foot space in the heart of Vancouver's Gallery Row on South Granville Street. We represent a vast array of artists including "the Michael Moore of Photography" - Chris Jordan - who had his first Canadian exhibition here last Spring (click on his name for a direct link to his own site).
I like being part of the gallery, it's an upbeat and progressive environment where all sorts of interesting ideas and characters intersect.
Although people often think working in a gallery must be a relaxing and easy gig, believe me - it's not! Behind our smiling and calm front, we have to manage hundreds of details to create a new exhibition each month. It's kind of like a musical event - the band always looks cool and professional during their show, while backstage groupies are running around naked and the manager has just knifed the promoter. Despite the craziness, I am proud to be part of it all... especially when brilliant and conscious artists like Chris Jordan are with us.
Here's another Jordan image about our culture's obsession with manufactured things. Below is another huge image, this one is called Barbie Dolls, it depicts:
32,000 Barbie Dolls - equal to the number of elective breast augmentations done every month in the USA (2006 stat).
